Army Cadets

The Army Cadets meet on Tuesdays and Thursday nights at 7.30 in the Cadet Hut on Rushton Road.
The Army Cadet site says:

"The organisation has been successfully combating youthful boredom for over 100 years and is currently helping some 50,000 boys and girls aged 13 - 18 years to become young achievers.
It is one of the country's leading youth organisations. Not part of the Army, as many think, albeit partly funded by the Ministry of Defence. Yes it does wear uniform and hold rank, and has a training syllabus which draws on the proven morale-building techniques and activities of the military way of life. But the ACF offers much more. Climbing, canoeing, first aid, target shooting, sports, weekend camping, pot holing, clay pigeon shooting, annual camps, courses, service to the community, overseas expeditions, participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, good friendship, discipline, leadership and development - and lots of fun!
Qualifications via the AFC's progressive "Star" system is included in an individuals National Record of Achievement and it can lead to a BTEC/SCOTVEC award. These are recognised as valuable qualifications by employers. Many Cadets will choose to take the skills they have learned in the ACF directly into the commercial world but some will go on to a career with the Armed Forces. Whatever choice they make, they all have experienced a sense of achievement and adventure
Uniform is loaned free of charge - the only cost of joining is the price of a pair boots, and a small weekly subscription."
Log on to the  Army Cadet site for many more details and links to much more.

Townswomen's Guilds are groups of women who meet together regularly, regardless of politics, race, age, religion or circumstance, to exchange ideas, develop new skills and interests, get involved with various issues and, above all, have fun.

The movement has its roots way back in 1865 when a group of women joined together to press for equal franchise and, after women were given the vote in 1928, the Townswomen's Guilds was formed to educate them in the principles of good citizenship. TG is still committed to achieving equal status for women and fights nationally on many issues which affect women and men alike.
