Following a visit to Bungoma, Western Kenya, in October 2003 by the curate of St Giles Church, Rev. Mary Garbutt, a link was formed between St Giles Church and Malakisi Township Parish. This Parish began in June 1984 with four churches - Kamorototo, Khasolo, Nabukhwe and Malakisi Township Church - and now has well over 200 Christians.

The churches are situated in a desperately poor area where there is insufficient food, clothing and accommodation. Most of the homes are built of mud with thatched roofs and they regularly collapse during the rainy season.

There are many widows and orphans largely because of the spread of AIDS. However, many people, mostly children, still die every day from illnesses that can be prevented by vaccination if the money was available. There is no hospital in the area and the nearest clinic, staffed by 2 under trained nurses and no doctor, is some distance away. There is no transport to the clinic, so if you are very sick and need help you must walk or travel on the rear carrier of a bicycle.

The Christians in the area take seriously their responsibility to care for the widows, orphans, and homeless in their communities and the women in particular work tremendously hard to ensure that practical help accompanies the preaching of the Gospel.

As a result of the link between Malakisi Township Parish, Bungoma and St Giles Church, Desborough things are beginning to happen and improvements are beginning to be made. You can keep up to date with the situation in Malakisi by visiting this site regularly. News will be updated monthly.
