CHILD PROTECTION POLICY APPENDIX 1

KINDS OF ABUSE (referred to in Paragraph 2.3 of the Child Protection Policy)

1 Abuse is about adult power and the betrayal of trust. The four categories of abuse are:

1.1 Physical
Where children receive physical injury or hurt: beaten, locked up, tied down, shaken. Lack of food, drink, shelter, warmth.

1.2 Sexual
Where adults seek sexual gratification by using children.

1.3 Emotional
Where children are harmed by a lack of love and affection, are subject to verbal threats or taunts or are given responsibility beyond their years or used in parental conflict.

1.4 Neglect
Where there is a failure to protect children from danger and their health and development is put at risk. ‘Home alone’ or having to fend for themselves on the streets, in parks.

2 Signs of Abuse

2.1 The following may indicate abuse but there could be other explanations.

2.2 Physical
Unexplained or hidden injuries, lack of medical attention.

2.3 Sexual

2.4 Emotional
Reverting to younger behaviour, nervousness, attention seeking, sudden under-achievement, running away, stealing, and lying.

2.5 Neglect
Looking uncared for and unhappy, being withdrawn or aggressive, having lingering injuries or health problems.
